Essilor was founded in 1972 by the merger of French companies Essel and Silor. It is now the global leader in ophthalmic optics.

Essilor designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of ophthalmic lenses. The company also invests heavily in Research and Development as well as Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Essilor invests around 4% of annual revenues in R&D to continually bring new and more effective products to market, and has research centres in the US, France and Singapore. Essilor also develops and markets equipment, precision instruments and services for eye care professionals as well as for optical lens laboratories.
